Speaking of Indonesia [see last post]
The CRAZIEST thing happened last sunday.
So Tez and I are at church and they are having this child dedication part of the service (Second Pres-it's a big deal) well this family comes up and Tez looks at me and says "I swear that family is Indonesian." We can't tell for sure but decided to meet them after church seeing as the likelihood of running into them again is about the same as my chances of winning the TN lottery (Second Pres-it's big). So after church we head over to meet the family and sure enough they're from not only Indonesia but Tez' hometown itself-Jakarta.
Well this is exciting seeing as Tez only knows one other Indonesian here in the city, and after meeting us they tell us to come to lunch with them. Well i felt kind of bad intruding on their plans but Tez tells me that in Indo if someone says: Do you have plans b/c if not you can come with us (or something to that liking) they are simply asking to be polite; however, if they TELL you to come then they sincerely want you to be there. So seeing as we were sincerely asked- we went and what an experience it was.
We get there and there are like 2 full tables of Indonesians filled at maximum capacity, so around 20-25 people...minus like 6 other of us whities (am i a whitie? compared to tez-YES) and a Japanese man who was there, like the rest of us from marrying in. We ate at a place called East Asia where there was a lazy susan in the middle of the rather large table (Fact for the day: when international students from Asia etc come to the US they have to be taught how to pass food around the table b/c it's not common for them to do that due to a lazy susanish contraption that is common in their households) anyways upon all sitting down enter the food: Fish soup... teriyaki oysters...fish complete with head, teeth, and greenish skin :)... duck and, my personal favorite, duck skin- which is on a plate surrounded by doughy biscuits to which you put the duck skin in between and- WALA-a delicacy!
I am prob making it sound gross but it was all pretty great food and a great experience. We got there around 12:30 and all stayed until a little after 3ish, talking about Indo and religion and how everyone met their significant others etc never a dull moment or an opportunity to laugh...Tez and I were completely new to the group but there was such a sense of camaraderie between us all.
There was a moment when the Indonesian mother brought her cute little Chinese Indonesian daughter to me and said "Look it's tante Tati" which in Indonesian means aunt, a term more of respect for someone older than you than an actual family member. It was unexpectedly sweet.
Upon leaving we all said goodbye and they got our numbers and said they would let us know when the next get together is and I must say...I'm kind of looking forward to it :)
