Bossypants by Tina FeyMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Okay I'll be honest, if you're looking for something as hilarious as 30 ROCK this book is not it; however it IS written by the mastermind behind the series so that is worth SOMETHING. First of all let me say I have a girl crush on Tina Fey. Sometimes, in the wee small hours of the night while my husband, dog and cat are all sound asleep in their beds I slip on my fake designer glasses and (in my best weekend update fashion) say sarcastic little bits about current events into the mirror....I kidd. Nonetheless I couldn't wait until this little gem of a book came out. Tina Fey...real...uncensored... and BOY do I mean UNCENSORED.
And this is where all girl crushes fall short. You can read all the US weekly commentary there is about someone until, one day, you realize they are in fact a ... real... person. Tina Fey can be a tad vulgar--what do you expect from someone who had to make her way up past the glass ceiling of show business. But, like all those SNL skits we love, sometimes you have to take the vulgar with the hilariously brilliant, unless you turn the show completely off...
If you were like me as a kid and found it absolutely thrilling to stay up until 10:30 to catch SNL- these were the skits Tina Fey, as well as CONAN O'BRIEN wrote. Her bits about the show are worth the read. There is a tad bit of me who wants to be Tina Fey in that she is who she is unapologetically. In her book she speaks about trying to push back on gender stereotypes, which, I feel is very much needed in the media. It's also nice to hear about her childhood, how she got into the business, to learn about 30 Rock, and even learn a little more about her glasses. After reading this book I will admit my girl crush dwindled a bit but, as I am sure she would prefer, I have a whole lot more respect for her.
This book was an interesting and funny read, but not necessarily in the way I expected it to be...
